Does anyone know how to get access to replace the packing on the rudders of a 36' 1983 sport fisherman? Short of hiring a very mechanical 8 year old, I can't figure out how to get in a position to do the job without tearing the horizontal support completely out of the boat.

my guess is that your reserve gas tank is right between where you'd have access to the shafts. Mine is the same way. it's a royal pain to service the shafts.

I am not a small guy and understand your plight, short of asking you to loose some weight or actually find a mechanically inclined 8 year old, you got go in to that tight space. I asked my wife once and guess what she said? Good luck, once down there stretch out and get as comfortable as possible, the fun comes when you get out.
