I have a 78, 33 SF and My port volt meter gauge started reading 12.7 volts while the engine is running. I was out at Redfish Island for the weekend when this occurred, so I replaced the alternator with my spare. No help, the alternator and the volt meter on the console still reads battery voltage. Does anyone know how to check the voltage regulator to see if it's the culprit? Be advised I'm no Watson..

I believe that my voltage regulators are mounted on the engine mount stringers. They are small rectangular units about the size of three decks of cards. I have had conversations with some that have told me that they have converted to a newer set-up by eliminating the external voltage regulator and rewiring for the alternator that has the built-in regulator. My units are definatly external, and not sure how to check them for proper voltage.

I would first check the acuracy of the meter by placing a digitial volt/ohm meter on it. Typically while running you have 13.5, so the meter only has to be off a little bit to read low.

The regulator is in the alternator.
Let us know how you make out,
