New tack at boat show:
Sales, sales, incentives 'We're taking every reasonable deal we can get' By KEVIN POST Business Editor, 609-272-7250 Published: Thursday, February 7, 2008 ATLANTIC CITY - It's not quite whatever floats your boat, but it's close ... as close as it's ever likely to get. With the economy slowing further after a tough 2007, boat dealers and manufacturers are increasing discounts, giving away accessories and helping with financing at the 29th annual Atlantic City International Power Boat Show this week. "Our philosophy for the show has changed," said Don Ditzel, sales manager and vice president of Comstock Yacht Sales & Marina in Brick, Ocean County. "Ordinarily we'd have guidelines for deals at the show. This year, no guidelines. We're taking every reasonable deal we can get." One of Comstock's brands, Millville-based Silverton Marine, is offering special incentives to existing Silverton customers who want to trade up, Ditzel said. Another brand, Pursuit, is throwing in a $7,000 electronics package for free with each purchase, he said. Dr. Ira Trocki, the plastic surgeon who owns Egg Harbor Yachts in Egg Harbor City, is announcing at this year's show a major change in his company's business that will allow it to offer unprecedented discounts. Trocki said Egg Harbor Yachts is eliminating its dealer network and switching to manufacturer-direct sales of its custom boats. "On a $1 million boat, for example, normally a manufacturer might offer an 8 percent to 10 percent discount. From us, you can get a discount of up to 28 percent," Trocki said. "It's like you can buy the boat and we throw in a house." |
